Stage manager

Stage managers plan, organise, supervise, and coordinate the activities of workers responsible for placing sets and properties, and operating lighting and sound equipment as part of film, television or stage productions.

Day-to-day

  • Organise rehearsals
  • Supervise the positioning of scenery, props and the lighting and sound equipment
  • Work with staff to plan wardrobe, set, scene changes, sound and lighting
  • Keep the ‘prompt copy’ of the script, which notes the performer’s position on stage, script changes, and the props, lighting and sound
  • Supervise the ‘entry and exit’ – the times when sets and equipment are set up before the show and taken down afterwards
  • Give cues to performers and technical crew
  • Work with the production staff to plan and design the stage
  • Manage and organise props
